Dear readers,
The month of July IS quintessential summer in Maine! During this beautiful summertime weather, our library has had visitors from as far away as Texas. There’s nothing like Mainers returning home with their children and visiting our little library, watching youngsters that love books & hanging out playing with legos. Some will be returning home, some are moving back to Maine, and the library is a great meeting place to just sit back and visit.
A few reminders: Free library cards are available not just to Whitefield residents, but any resident of our local, surrounding towns; and for those that work during the weekdays, the library added evening hours this year, staying open on Wednesdays from 5pm to 7pm. As school is around the corner, many high school students have volunteer hours required for graduation, and we gladly welcome you! If you are interested in volunteering, check out our Facebook page, Whitefield Library, & look for the “Send Message” button under the “About” section and our Volunteer Coordinator will get back to you. Volunteering at the library is typically done in 2 hour increments, and is an easy, fun way to rack up those volunteer hours. The library hours are: Wednesdays, 10am to 12pm and 5pm to 7pm and Saturdays, 10am to 2pm.
As summer starts to wind down, now is a great time to stop by on the the third Wednesday of the month, August 21st at 10:30am to check out Knitting & Kneedles, a time to meet others interested in the same or similar crafts and have a dedicated time for yourself to work on your independent project while relaxing at the library! Continuing on the fourth Wednesday, August 28th at 6pm to 7pm, the Book Club will meet to discuss this month’s pick, Pachinko, by Min Jin Lee, a NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2017. Pachinko is an “extraordinary epic” of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). Finally, Family Game Night meets the second Wednesday of the month, with next Game Night to be held on September 11th at 6pm to 7pm. There are many choices of games available for families or groups of friends to get together & have some fun! Our knowledgeable gamer, Josh, will be there to teach you a new game and you can enter your name into a drawing to win a brand new game before you leave. Unplug for a night, relax, and enjoy.
That’s all the news from the big yellow library at the top of the hill!
