First Friday: Learn More

Join us August 7th as we welcome local photographer Howie Nielsen!

An avid naturalist, birdwatcher, gardener, and dentist, Howie got his start volunteering his dental skills at a Moravian church hospital in northeast Nicaragua in 1976. His free time was spent wandering along the Rio Coco’s riparian woodlands, discovering tropical bird life.

Smitten, he spent 6 months in Central America contemplating a pursuit in field ornithology, but realized dentistry was a more prutent way forward. After 22 years of general practice in Augusta, he and his wife, Karen, landed in SE Asia where they spent the the next 11 years working on wildlife conservation projects in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, India with volunteer dentistry in Vietnam and the Philippines.

Since 2018, Howie and Karen spend winters on the road, returning to Whitefield in early spring for bird migration and gardens. Howie has generously offered to donate 100% of the proceeds of the sales of his artwork to the library.
